An urgent council meeting will be held tomorrow to strip disgraced former Aberdeen depute provost Alan Donnelly of his positions on trusts and other outside bodies.
Donnelly was found guilty of sexually assaulting a man at a function but, while he has resigned from the Conservative party and been reported to standards watchdogs, he continues as a councillor for Torry and Ferryhill.
Council co-leader Douglas Lumsden has called on the 65-year-old to resign from his post and has already stripped him of committee positions- with replacements to be considered at the next full council meeting in March.
An Aberdeen City Council spokesman said: “We have been informed of the decision reached by the administration in relation to councillor Donnelly’s removal from the administration and from the committees on which he served as an administration representative.
“An urgent business committee will take place on Thursday morning.”
Mr Lumsden admitted there was little else that could be done to force him to resign.
He said: “He was only convicted last week so this is his first opportunity to resign and I think we’re doing the right thing calling on him to do so.
“It’s now up to Councillor Donnelly whether he decides to heed our calls or not. “
“The council is quite limited in what it can do to force a member to step down but we’re sending, hopefully, one strong voice from all the groups that he should go.”
Donnelly could not be reached for comment yesterday.
