Robert Riggs left his rifle outside its gun cabinet while away on holiday.

Motorists had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision as a drink-driver veered his van across the road in Aberdeen.

Wieslaw Homeniok appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday, where he was banned from the road after admitting charges of driving carelessly and driving while more than five times the legal alcohol limit.

The 55-year-old swung into the opposing carriageway, causing an oncoming vehicle to “take evasive action” as he drove his white Vauxhall Combo van from the city centre into Torry on Saturday, September 28.

Fiscal Jade Wong said that Homeniok’s car was seen shortly after 10.20pm “swerving across carriageway toward oncoming traffic” before mounting the kerb.

The court heard that another motorist decided to pursue the Vauxhall and called the police to tell them where it was going.

The fiscal added: “The vehicle continued onto Victoria Road where it hit a wing mirror on a stationary vehicle.

“The accused was traced by police shortly thereafter.”

A breath test showed that he had 112 microgrammes of alcohol in 100millitres of breath. The legal limit is 22mcg.

Sheriff Graeme Napier deferred sentencing in order to obtain reports, but told the 55-year-old, of Girdleness Road, he “should not be surprised” to find himself locked up.
