Tributes have been paid to an Aberdeen community stalwart after she died of cancer, aged 67, earlier this week.
Wilma Mackland, he development manager at Sunnybank Community Centre has been remembered by her friends and colleagues as the “people’s champion”, a person who was always determined to make a difference in the world.
Originally a hairdresser, Mrs Mackland was brought up in Causewayend and stayed in the trade for 15 years before moving on to work as a cleaner at Linksfield Academy.
Shortly afterwards, she joined two community councils, Linksfield and Sunnybank.
Posting on social media, Sunnybank Community Centre said they were heartbroken and had taken the decision to postpone all classes for a week.
Part of the group’s post said: “Wilma’s dedication to our community and her determination that everyone should be able to participate in activities within the centre regardless of nationality, age, creed or financial situation has meant that hundreds, if not thousands of people have benefited over the years from her generosity.
“Thank you, Wilma, for the truly fantastic ride. You were the people’s champion, our hero. You’ll always be in our hearts.”
Her husband, John Mackland, works as a janitor at Kittybrewster School and St Machar Academy.
He spoke to the Evening Express about the impact his wife had on his life.
She said: “Wilma’s the type of quine who would fuss over me or anyone else. She would do anything to help anybody.
“I am very proud of what she’s done and I hope that Sunnybank keep up the good work.
“All the cards and flowers that have come into this house, that’s how well liked she was. It’s overwhelming and I can’t thank people enough.”
Mrs Mackland’s funeral will be held on Thursday, January 30 at the East Chapel at Aberdeen Crematorium at 13:45.
People have been asked to wear bright colours to honour her memory and irrepressible spirit.
