A university is marking a major milestone today as it celebrates its 525th anniversary.
Aberdeen University will mark the key milestone with staff, students and special guests.
They will gather in the institution’s Elphinstone Hall where they will hear of the institution’s new strategic vision called Aberdeen 2040.
Alumna and BBC star of Call the Midwife Laura Main will host the event, which will set out the priorities that will guide the university over the next 20 years.
Principal and vice-chancellor, Professor George Boyne, said: “Since 1495 this great university has been ‘open to all and dedicated to the pursuit of truth in the service of others’.
“And while it may be 525 years since we were established on those principles by Bishop William Elphinstone, that foundational purpose is still our driving force more than five centuries on.
“These celebrations are about more than just marking what has gone before – although there are plenty of pioneering achievements to commemorate.
“They are also about planning ahead and, following extensive collaboration with staff, students and stakeholders, the launch of our bold new strategic vision to tackle today’s global challenges.
“We have just invested in 50 new academic posts to further bolster our world-class teaching and research capabilities and multi-million pound plans are also in place to revitalise and regenerate our King’s College campus.”
The new pledges for Aberdeen 2040 include a commitment to inclusivity, new courses, becoming more diverse and encouraging sustainability.
