Thousands of Aberdonians are embracing foreign language cinema after being attracted to a local picture house by a newly-released Oscar-winning movie.

As of yesterday, 2,100 people had flocked to the Belmont Filmhouse to see Parasite – making the South Korean production the most popular foreign language film ever screened at the venue.

And bosses expect that tally to at least double by the time it completes its run at the end of the month.

Colin Farquhar, head of cinema operations at the Belmont, said: “Foreign cinema is a hard market to do well in, but customers who have come to watch the film have loved it.

“It makes a difference that the film has won an Oscar, but people have been really enjoying it.

“Personally I thought it was well paced, funny, had a great soundtrack and was well deserving of the awards it received.

“It is always good to see people dip their toes into art house films.”

The previous record for most popular foreign language film screened at the city complex was held by 2015 Swedish movie The Hundred Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared – which drew in 1,400 movie fans.

Parasite, which has been shown at the cinema for a little more than a week, won Oscars for best picture, best director, best original screenplay and best international feature film last Sunday in Hollywood.
