MP slams council plans to axe last Torry green space

An MP has slated council plans to cut the last green space in Torry.

Stephen Flynn, MP for Aberdeen South, has condemned the local authority’s proposals to axe the last green space in the area.

His response followed controversial council plans to transform 70 acres of land into industrial space.

The scheme would also lead to the Doonies Rare Breeds Farm being turned into an industrial park with the coastal road landscape being altered completely.

Mr Flynn said:“Let’s not beat about the bush here, if the council administration get their way, they plan to rip up the last green space in Torry whilst Doonies Farm has clearly been earmarked as expendable.

“Torry is one of Aberdeen’s most historic communities and residents rightly feel that the administration are turning it into an industrial ground at every turn.”

Recent changes to Torry have been at the forefront of political debate in Aberdeen with the council’s incinerator project based in the area as well as the harbour development and waste water facility.

The SNP MP added:“Let’s not forget that folk in Torry have already had to accept the loss of the Bay of Nigg to the harbour expansion, not to mention well-publicised odour complaints from the waste water treatment facility and the hated incinerator project.

“[Council co-leader] Douglas Lumsden must go back to the drawing board on this one and come back with something else approaching commonsense.”
