Based in Aberdeen’s West End, Hometown Barbers is one of many businesses affected by the coronavirus outbreak.
Last night as the Chancellor announced new measures to help self-employed people, owner of the shop, Mark Reilly, felt “lucky” to fall into the eligible category.
After opening the shop in October 2016, Mr Reilly narrowly qualifies as he has been self-employed for three years.
He said: “It’s quite a while away but at least there is some support for local businesses to survive – it’s really a shame for people who have just started out.
“It is understandable that we won’t get anything until June, so many other things need to be done first.
“At the end of the day, we’re all very lucky to have this opportunity – we’re all in the same boat.”
The business owner has estimated that the shop should be able to survive until the end of April and hopes everyone “does what they’re told and stays in”.
He welcomed the new grant and noted that it would help some people to stay positive and not worry.
“If we need to take a pay cut, so be it – as long as the shop survives,” Mr Reilly added.
