More than 3,000 volunteers have been told they are “truly inspirational” for their work to help NHS Grampian through the coronavirus pandemic.
Chief executive Professor Amanda Croft has written to the “incredible” thousands who have come forward to assist hospitals and health centres in the north-east.
But she also warned, despite the huge community effort to cope with Covid-19, that “the challenge that lies ahead is even tougher”.
Prof Croft said few could have predicted “the remarkable response” from the people of the north-east to this crisis.
The Grampian Assistance Hub was set up last month to coordinate all local help offered to NHS Grampian.
In her letter, Prof Croft said: “Our healthcare staff throughout Grampian are working incredibly hard on the frontline to tackle this virus and protect the public.
“It is in times of crisis, like we face today, that those who are able are asked to step up and help the most vulnerable in our society.
“These are unprecedented times, and I’m pleased to say that you have come forward in unprecedented numbers to protect our NHS and support those most in need.
“The spirit and enthusiasm shown by people from all walks of life is truly inspirational.
“I give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has come forward: we owe each one of you a huge debt of gratitude.”
Prof Croft told the volunteers that the continued response to the pandemic would require “huge effort across all areas of society” in the immediate future.
