North-east hospital patients who cannot receive visitors will find it easier to keep in touch with their loved ones thanks to a new scheme.
NHS Grampian has received 25 tablet computers from The Oil and Gas Technology Centre (OGTC), which will be used for video-calling in wards across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray.
Visiting at all Scottish hospitals was suspended last month to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.
The donated iPads are currently being adjusted to meet health board specifications, and will be in circulation across the area this week.
Alzheimer Scotland dementia nurse consultant Lyn Irvine, who is also the clinical leader for the project, said: “Thanks to this thoughtful donation we are able to keep patients in our care in touch with their loved ones.
“This will have such a positive impact not only on our patients in our hospitals across Grampian but our staff caring for them and the patient’s families too.
“The importance of contact from friends and family in someone’s mental wellbeing and physical recovery cannot be understated – especially in the situation we all find ourselves in today.”
Nicola McIntosh, OGTC finance and commercial director, added: “During these times it is important that now, more than ever, we support one another and technology has a key role to play in keeping us connected.
“There are many ways to support those who are in hospital during this time and we are glad we can help them connect with others.”
