VIP international arrival surprises airport staff as he kickstarts the festive season

Armed with a sack full of toys and presents, a VIP guest made his way through arrivals at Aberdeen International Airport today.

Airport staff were among those surprised as a cheery Santa Claus landed in the Granite City.

Wearing his face covering and following Covid-19 protocols, he is preparing to take up residency at his workshop in the Bon Accord Centre.

He reassured children across the north-east that coronavirus wouldn’t have an impact on presents for those on the nice list as he had new safety guidance in place.

Local families will be able to visit Santa and his elves between November 14 and Christmas Eve and all profits made from the workshop will go to Charlie House which supports babies, children and young people with complex disabilities and life-limiting conditions in the north-east.

The charity’s Sarah Bremner said it was “fantastic” proceeds will support its work as fundraising income has dropped by 70% compared to last year.

She added: “Funds are always important but now, facing a significant decrease, this will help more than ever.

“We are delighted to partner with Bon Accord on this. There will be special sessions for the families we support.”

Centre manager Craig Stevenson added: “Santa has been fully briefed on government guidelines and we will have a range of measures in place including online bookings only, social distancing and hand sanitising to ensure that this is a safe and fun experience.

“Most of all, we can’t wait to bring some festive magic to Aberdeen.”
