Brave schoolgirl raises money for charities that helped her

Their support and friendship has kept her going through months of gruelling treatment for leukaemia.

And as the close knit group celebrate their last day at Culter Primary School, Sarah Wiseman wanted to do something to show her pals what they mean to her.

The 12-year-old decided to organise leaving hoodies for her year, with the money raised going to the charity that has also helped her enormously, the Archie Foundation.

This is not her first fundraising effort, as the brave youngster has already raised more than £16,000 for various organisations with her Bright Ideas campaign.

Her mother, Isla Wiseman, of Culter, said Sarah’s campaign was a true reflection of her generous personality.

“Everything that has been thrown at her she just picks herself up and gets on with it. We just think if it helps even one family feel like they are not on their own, then that is great,” she said.

“Sarah has had so much support from her friends and they have all stuck by her. She wasn’t at school for eight months and they were all visiting her at home and at hospital. They are the most incredible group of girls and she wanted to thank them.”

Sarah was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), a type of cancer most commonly diagnosed in children, four days before Christmas in 2012.

She has got eight months of chemotherapy treatment left to go, but her mother said she is doing well. The youngster raised nearly £325 for Archie through selling her hoodies, and also brought in £110 for Clic Sargent through a bucket collection at the primary seven leaver’s show.

“In terms of the leukaemia it has not come back, and we need to keep that up,” Mrs Wiseman said. “She is doing really well, although the side effects have been awful for her. They have been getting worse as time goes on.

“Sarah is a great fan of the Archie Foundation, and wanted to give something back. They make such a difference to all of us, even just with little things like there being a microwave, so I can do my own meals when I stay with her.”

David Cunningham, chief executive of the charity, said: “Sarah has raised a lot of money for the Archie Foundation with ‘Sarah’s Bright Ideas’, and the Leavers’ Hoodies is another perfect example. We are very grateful for this wonderful donation and wish Sarah and her classmates lots of success in their new school.”
