Aberdeen FC fans had made the journey to the northern city to see the team’s Europa League clash with FC Groningen.

However, in the run up to the game, fans were said to have been charged by up to 200 rowdy Dutch fans.

Mounted police officers are said to have chased down the FC Groningen fans following the incident.

Some reports said officers used batons to keep the charging fans at bay.

Many took to social media to express their shock at the events in Groningen.

Darren Cooney said: “Any Dons fans in Groningen please take care. Seems some Dutch thugs are wanting a rammy.”

One Groningen resident, Kai Mulder, described said the “atmosphere was a bit grim” before the match due to the events.

Others posted photos of the Dons fans filling out pubs and streets in the city during warm summer weather.

However, another Groningen resident posted that the energy of the town centre was “beautiful” and “cosy” in the lead up to the game.

He added that it was a “generally positive atmosphere” despite the events.

Senior and football specific police officers travelled from the north-east with fans to attend the game.

However, Police Scotland could not comment on the events in Groningen.
