New services launched to tackle alcohol abuse

New services launched to tackle alcohol abuse

More support is to be offered to people struggling with alcohol problems.

Aberdeen charity, Drugs Action, is to deliver new services for people who drink too much or are dependent on alcohol from today.

The Hadden Street-based organisation will offer the services on behalf of NHS Grampian and Aberdeen City Council.

Chief executive Luan Grugeon is marking her first year in the post and is working to ensure people know that help is at hand.

She said: “A big focus will be letting people know that we are here for people with alcohol issues, not only people who are having problems with illicit drugs.

“We don’t just want to help people who are dependent, but try to engage with people who are drinking above the recommended limits each week – which is as many as 40% of adults – but do not see themselves as having that much of a problem.”

Drugs Action will offer people help through drop-ins, its helpline and its new website.

Support workers will help people get involved in their communities again through the Aberdeen Recovery Community (ARC), a partnership with NHS Grampian and social workers.

Mrs Grugeon said: “What we aim to do is to help people to enjoy main stream activities again so they can overcome their problems and go on to live more fulfilled lives.”

The charity will also continue to focus on educating people about the growing problem of legal highs.

Mrs Grugeon said: “In the year ahead, we want to develop new methods for getting the message out about new psychoactive substances, legal highs, so people are really informed.

“We’re developing training programmes so professionals such as teachers and youth workers can access key information about legal highs and the issues around them.

“It’s been a busy and very successful year and that’s been made possible by having such a committed team.”

The Drugs Action helpline number is 01224 594700.
