Hundreds of people are descending on Aberdeen’s city-centre as a festival to recognise all the good things about the Granite City kicks off.

More than 70 performances will be held during today and tomorrow at different venues during Celebrate Aberdeen.

Union Terrace Gardens, the Academy Shopping Centre courtyard, Denburn Viaduct, St Nicholas Deck and St Nicholas Street will be transformed into stages until 3pm today.

The festivities kick off again between 11am to 4pm tomorrow.

This is the first time the festival has been held, and it has been organised following the success of the previous Celebrate Aberdeen parades, which have seen more than 3,500 people take to Union Street for the last three years.

Union Terrace and Diamond Place are currently closed and there is no parking on Union Terrace or the slip road between Rosemount Viaduct and Union Terrace. Meanwhile, the right-turn ban for buses from Skene Street in to Rosemount Viaduct has been suspended.

Rosemount Viaduct from its junction at Skene Street and Denburn to Blackfriars Street is also closed until 7.30pm to accommodate the Aberdeen International Market.

An alternative route is available via Union Street, Broad Street, Upperkirkgate, Schoolhill and Rosemount Viaduct.
