Music fans are being invited to a showcase of the best sounds the north-east has to offer, all in the name of charity.

Oxjam Aberdeen Takeover returns to the city tonight for its sixth year, with over 30 acts playing seven venues across the city.

For the first time, each venue will be assigned a different genre, from rock and indie to classical and opera.

Stevie Kearney, student development and volunteer co-ordinator at Robert Gordon University (RGU) is one of the organisers of the event.

He said: “The idea is to have a multi-venue event, where you can move freely between each.

“It’s all local acts playing which is very much part of the ethos. I was involved in the Edinburgh event before and it was the same there.

“This is the first year we have offered alternative genres, which means there’s much more on offer than just the traditional indie, rock, acoustic performances.”

On the bill tonight are acts including Dear John, DeadFire, Lizabett Russo with Little Kicks frontman Steven Milne also making a solo appearance.

Cities across the UK will host similar Oxjam events this month.

Mr Kearney added: “It’s a great way to support local acts and a good cause at the same time.

“All the funds go to Oxfam, the cash raised is allocated wherever it is needed, there’s no specific area.

“It’s a fantastic way to experience what Aberdeen’s music scene is like, there’s maybe people out there who think the city doesn’t have much to offer.

“Sometimes it doesn’t get the credit it deserves, and it gets overshadowed by Glasgow and Edinburgh but there’s over 30 acts to experience here.”

The event kicks off in O’Neill’s on Back Wynd with acoustic performances.

Wristbands will be on sale at each venue with £10 for entry to all seven venues and £5 for entry to one.
