It was once a British institution.
At its peak, there were over 500 Wimpys in the UK and one on every high street in every major city.
But with the global expansion and mass adulation of other fast food chains like Burger King and McDonalds, the humble Wimpy has disappeared from our streets.
Today, there are just 89 of the restaurants left in the UK. And yesterday it was announced that Peterhead’s Marischal Street branch is the latest franchise to fall.
With that in mind, let us not forget the joy the Wimpy gave us before the big shots came on scene – and share your memories with the Press and Journal.
Here’s a quick run-down of where you can still find the last-remaining Wimpys in the north and north-east of Scotland…
1. Aberdeen, Sunset Boulevard, Beach Boulevard
There’s just one Wimpy restaurant left in Aberdeen, at the Sunset Boulevard at Aberdeen Beach. Wimpy is even the “proud sponsor” of the Wimpy Crazy train Rollercoaster.
The last Wimpy to close in the Granite City was located within Megabowl on George Street. The popular tenpin venue closed its doors in December 2005 after operating for more than 40 years. A game of bowling followed by a round of laser-tag and a Wimpy burger was the ultimate treat for those of us old enough to remember.
2. Dingwall, 62 High Street
Over the years, the main thoroughfare of Dingwall has lost a number of British institutes, like Woolworths. But the Wimpy has stood the test of time.
The Dingwall Wimpy is the last remaining restaurant in the north of Scotland.
3. Fraserburgh, 29 Hanover Street
The Wimpy in Fraserburgh has been a permanent fixture in the centre of town for decades, just a short walk from the harbour, beach and bus station. Many people will remember grabbing a quick burger before jumping on the bus home.
