A community group dedicated to an Aberdeen park will apply for a prestigious award which recognises the best green spaces in the UK.

The Friends of Seaton Park (FOSP), in conjunction with Aberdeen City Council, has set their sights on the annual Green Flag Award, considered one of the top park and public space awards in the country.

Duthie Park earned its first Green Flag award in July 2013, and now Seaton Park volunteers are hoping to continue the trend in Aberdeen.

Britain in Bloom judges extended their praise to the 67-acre park when judging the city’s public spaces this year, which Aberdeen went on to win the accolade for the 11th time.

The Green Flag Scheme is administered through Keep Scotland Beautiful and is judged on eight criteria including cleanliness, conservation and high levels of maintenance.

FOSP hope to be in the running for the award in 2016 and will discuss their ideas for wowing Green Flag judges at a public meeting next week.

Chairwoman of the group, Sheila Gordon, said: “Seaton Park is acknowledged to be one of the most beautiful natural parks in the UK but it does require some restoration and repair work on its facilities.

“We are very happy to work hand in hand with Aberdeen City Council in making Seaton Park even more attractive for visitors.

“We want to upgrade the children’s play area and restore the famous Mr Therm engine and our picturesque fountain as priorities.”

The friends group will also inform their members and the public of developments at the park next Tuesday at 7.30pm at Dunbar Hall, Old Aberdeen.
