Police are investigating after a conductor was attacked on a train travelling through Aberdeenshire yesterday.

The “unprovoked attack” took place between Stonehaven and Aberdeen yesterday at around 2.55pm on Scotrail’s Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen service.

The train left the capital at 12.30pm yesterday.

A police spokesman said the man – who boarded the C-coach of the train at Stonehaven – punched the conductor in the stomach 15 minutes into the journey “for no apparent reason”.

The man suspected of the attack was said to have been drunk at the time and is described as around 5ft 7ins.

He is said to have been wearing a light-coloured baseball cap, a dark jumper, a green and light brown jacket, dark trousers and dark blue trainers.

Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage as they carry inquiries into the incident.

The British Transport Police officer in charge of the inquiry, constable Craig Allan, said: “Rail staff should be able to work in an environment free from the threat of encountering violence or anti-social behaviour.

“This attack is unacceptable and I am appealing for anyone who was on the train and may have witnessed the assault to come forward.”

British Transport Police can be contacted on 0800 40 50 40 or by texting 61016. Information can also be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
