Hundreds of adults and children with disabilities will be receive an extra special gift this year, thanks to the people of the north-east.

Social care charity Cornerstone set up a Giving Tree scheme, which involved scores of businesses and organisations such as the NHS donating personalised gifts for adults and children in the north-east.

The presents came in all shapes and sizes, from puzzles and building blocks to films, sensor toys and sports kits.

More than 1,000 presents were donated at an estimated value of more than £13,000.

And yesterday, a very special Santa Claus picked up the gifts from the charity’s Aberdeen headquarters so they can be distributed in time for Christmas.

Callum McDougall, who lives at the charity’s Angus Court development in Portlethen, took on the role and went around the office collecting the gifts and packing them up.

Fundraising manager Barbara Boertien said: “Callum did a fantastic job dressing up as Santa and helping to pack some of the presents, which included many if this year’s top toys, with plenty of Disney gifts, Lego and Transformers.

“He put a huge smile on everyone’s face as he went round the office in his costume, getting everyone into the Christmas spirit.

“For many of us, spending time with our friends and family, having fun and exchanging gifts and Christmas time is something we all look forward to.

“However, for people with disabilities and other support needs, Christmas can often be a difficult and emotional time.

“The presents are now being distributed to those who will benefit most and receiving a special gift picked put by our supporters will help to make their Christmas truly magical.”
