Aberdeen firm’s silver lining for charities

An Aberdeen accountancy firm has decided to mark its silver anniversary this year with a packed programme of charity fundraisers.

Meston Reid and Co is celebrating its 25th year in business by staging a number of events in aid of local children’s care group Charlie House and city-based urological cancer charity UCAN.

Staff have already collected £4,000 through a bag-packing day in Inverurie and client donations.

The company’s Annabel Hope said: “The partners wanted to mark our 25th year and we all thought an appropriate way to do that would be to raise some money for local charities.

“Staff were asked to nominate groups and at the end of it Charlie House and UCAN had an equal number of votes, so we decided to split the money between them.

“The charities were chosen for personal reasons, because they had been important to people.”

The fundraising will continue this month with a Burns night ceilidh at the Forum Bar, which has already sold out.

In February there will be a ladies day, featuring an afternoon tea and singing session from Meston Reid and Co’s in-house talent Nicole Christie.

Throughout the year the group will stage a quiz night, ‘zumbathon’, and cycle and golf challenges.

As well as monthly events, the firm will run regular fundraising initiatives such as bake sales and tuck shops and the activities will conclude in February 2016 with a charity ball at Aberdeen’s Chester Hotel.

Charlie House helps support children with life-limiting conditions and complex disabilities, and the funds generated will go towards the creation of a specialist care centre in Aberdeen as well as its other ongoing work.

UCAN offers support to men and women in the north-east suffering from urological cancers and is based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
