North-east band wowed talent show judges

A north-east band left judges in awe at one of the UK’s biggest talent contests.

Franklin – whose members all hail from Aberdeen – were performing in Glasgow, in the final of SoundWave, a contest for unsigned musicians.

The band – made up of guitarists Lewis Harper, 19, and Jack Lovie, 18, singer Jessica Johnston, 17, bassist Peter Tait, 18, and drummer Nairn Milne, 18 – took to the stage at the city’s O2 Abc venue on Saturday night along with 13 other acts.

They fell short of victory, but said taking part had been an “amazing” experience.

Mr Harper said: “Unfortunately we didn’t win the competition overall but we got the opportunity to play at the O2, in front of some really influential people – it was a fantastic night.

“We had to bring a minimum of 60 tickets, and anything else we requested went towards our final score. In the end we brought around 100 people down from Aberdeen.

“There were also people there from Glasgow who we had never met before, who had come to see us after hearing our music.

“I think the main difference in performing in that size of venue compared to what we’re used to is the tense moment when you finish playing and you wait for the applause,” he added.

“But hearing that amount of people applaud you is one of the best feelings ever.

“One of the judges told us he really liked our songs and style of music. Another was impressed with our energy and the way we were undaunted by the size of the stage. That was great to hear.”
