Milder weather with rain is forecast for the north and north east tomorrow, but colder conditions and wintry showers are expected to return on Monday.

The forecast for today for the Highlands and islands and Grampian is bright, but cold with snow on high ground and wintry showers at lower levels, but these are expected to become fewer and lighter during this afternoon.

There will also be strong westerly winds with a maximum temperature of 5C today and minimum of -1C tonight.

In the Highlands and islands, showers this evening are expected to merge into persistent rain from around midnight and it will become milder overnight with a thaw of lying snow.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Sunday will be much milder with rain at times over the West Highlands and mainly dry with some brightness in the northeast, with widespread and heavier rain extending southeastwards across all parts late afternoon.”

He said it would remain windy with a maximum temperature of 11C.

In the Grampian area, the most frequent and heaviest wintry showers today are expected to fall across Moray and western Aberdeenshire.

It will be drier and brighter across the southeast, with showers elsewhere easing during the afternoon.

The Met Office spokesman said: “A few showers will continue across the north and west this evening before dying out in the early hours.

“It will be largely dry elsewhere overnight, with a slight frost through Deeside this evening.”

Sunday is expected to be much milder and dry for most of the day, with some brightness across the north and a maximum temperature of 12C.

But the outlook for both the Highlands and islands and Grampian for Monday to Wednesday is for a return to colder weather on Monday with wintry showers, then milder and cloudier again Tuesday, with some rain.

It is expected to be cold and windy again on Wednesday with more wintry showers.
