A motorist had a narrow escape when his car overturned on an Aberdeen road and crashed through several gardens this morning.

The grey Mini Cooper landed on its side on Westburn Drive, Aberdeen, at around 10.45am after mounting a pavement.

Locals came to the aid of the man, whose car is understood to have ploughed through four gardens on the street before coming to a halt.

The driver was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary following the incident.

One witness said: “He seemed to be okay, the car ripped up about four gardens and ended up on its side.”

Neighbours said the Mini hit a lamp post and several wheelie bins, leaving litter strewn across the pavement and lawns.

Garden fences were knocked down and trees and flowers flattened, while the vehicle was left a mangled wreck.

Police, fire and rescue and ambulance services were all called to the scene and the road was closed until around 12.30pm.

One of the residents whose gardens was damaged said it was lucky that nobody was walking on the pavement at the time.

He said: “It is astonishing that none of our possessions have been damaged. Basically the guy hit a lamp post the best part of 200 yards back up the road and just came flying across the road. He flipped between four gardens.

“It is absolutely astonishing. Luckily nobody was working in the gardens. The guy walked out the car. We don’t know what went wrong.”

Later, a police spokesman said: “The male seems to be uninjured and has gone home. We recovered the vehicle.”

A fire and rescue spokeswoman said: “We just made the vehicle safe.”

An ambulance service spokeswoman said a crew took the man to ARI, after which he discharged himself “of his own accord”.
