More than 300 people in Aberdeen yesterday caught a glimpse of how Scotland’s new £80m V&A Museum of Design will look

The V&A Museum of Design in Dundee will be the first of its kind outside London and its Design in Motion tour visited Aberdeen as one of 80 destinations on a 16-week expedition.

The exhibition is designed to help people get a feel for the major new cultural venue with members of the public invited step on board the tour bus to take a look.

Displays focussed on how new digital technology is working to reconstruct design heritage and create new, contemporary products in the process.

Pamela Roberts, learning manager for outreach and communities at the V&A said: “The Museum is going to be an international centre of design in Scotland.

“It will showcase 300 years of the design history of Scotland, which is very strong.

“There is no other museum like this outside London.

“We’ve had a fantastic response, we’re in week eight of a 16 week tour and we’ve had over 5,000 people attend.”

The museum will work to highlight the benefits of good design and generate interest in a career in the creative sector.

Philip Long, director of V&A Dundee said: “Design in Motion allows us to share the excitement, innovation and breadth of design with audiences across the country.

“Through this national tour we can showcase some of our most extraordinary contemporary designers and raise the profile of design and its benefits to society across Scotland.

“It helps demonstrate that design is a wonderful and very viable career choice for young people and there is a broad range of disciplines to consider.”

The event proved popular with those who attended in Aberdeen yesterday.

Chrissie Kennedy, a pensioner in Ferryhill said: “It’s showing a lot in a small space.

“It will appeal to lots of age groups and I’d like to visit it in Dundee when it opens.”

Lyn Duff, a 57-year-old nursery nurse in Hazlehead, said “It’s really interesting and a good way of giving people who are interested in seeing what is available.”

The tour will stay in the north-east when it visits Huntly today and Elgin tomorrow.
