Aberdeen predicted to bask in May Day holiday sunshine

The north-east is set for plenty of sunshine this week
The north-east is set for plenty of sunshine this week

Blue skies and sunshine will brighten the north-east’s May Day bank holiday following a cold, wet and windy weekend.

Forecasters predict a warm, dry day, with temperatures soaring to above average for the time of year.

The fine spell will also bring welcome relief for holidaymakers after heavy showers and strong easterly winds plagued the region yesterday.

Temperatures in Aberdeen reached just 6C and the Met Office issued a yellow warning for snow on high ground in the west of Aberdeenshire.

In contrast, the mercury is expected to rise to around 16C today – a few degrees above Aberdeen’s average May temperature of 14C.

The cold easterly winds will also die down overnight, heralding a return to the glorious spring weather of recent weeks.

Met Office meteorologist Stuart Brooks, said: “There will be another band of rain in the early hours but that will move away by the morning.

“Then it will be a dry, bright day.

“We are looking at 16C so it will be much warmer.

“There will be some clouds about at times but no rain during the day.

“It will be the best day of the holiday weekend by far.”

Sadly, the warm spell is expected to be short-lived, with more heavy rain expected to move into the area tomorrow.

Mr Brooks said: “On Tuesday morning, another band of rain comes up from the south.

“It will arrive around mid-morning.

“It looks like it will be quite constant once it comes so not a good day on Tuesday.

“Wednesday won’t see so much rain but it is going to be cold and windy with some showers.

“It will feel chilly because of a strong north-westerly wind.”

Thursday is also expected to be cold and windy with some showers.

Two weeks ago the north-east basked in temperatures on a par with top European sunspots but last week winter bit back with outbreaks of hail, sleet and snow.
