Power cut puts Aberdeen in the dark

Hundreds of homes left without power following a serious of faults on the grid.

Thousands of homes and businesses were left in the dark at the weekend when Aberdeen city centre was hit by a power cut.

Homes in the West End’s AB10 postcode area were affected by the power loss which started at around 11.45pm on Saturday night.

The outage affected 3,100 properties including those on Holburn Street, Gairn Terrace, Riverside Drive, Ferryhill Place, Fonthill Road and Polmuir Road.

A spokesman for energy firm SSE said the power was back on in every household by 1.35pm but that it was restored to most much sooner.

He apologised for any inconvenience caused by the power cut and said engineers had worked as quickly as possible to bring the power back on.

He added: “I would like to apologise for any inconvenience this caused but luckily we were able to get the power back on as quickly as possible.”

Ferryhill councillor Alan Donnelly was watching television at his Deemount Gardens home when the power went off.

He said the power cut was short-lived, lasting only about a minute, before everything returned to normal.

He added: “Most of the residents here are quite elderly so a lot of them would have been tucked up in bed but on a Saturday night there would have been a lot of people out and about as well.

“Thankfully there were no reports of car accidents.”

Around 60 revellers attending an engagement party at Inn at the Park, on the city’s Deemount Terrace, were also affected.

Manager Angela Stephen said: “The emergency lights went on so we had enough light and there were candles on the tables anyway.

“There was a DJ playing so that just stopped but some people had phones so they were using them to play music.

“They managed to stay until 1am and they all had a good time.”
