Aberdeen floods: Cars stranded, roads closed and businesses forced to shut

Police and fire crews are currently at a number of flooded areas across Aberdeen as the city comes to terms with this afternoon’s downpour.

The heavens opened, the thunder clapped and the lightning flashed from 3pm onwards this afternoon and a number of roads across the city are now under water.

Our photographers and readers have been out taking pictures, while a number of drivers have tried, with great difficulty, to make their way across the city.

An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said: “Due to the extremely heavy rain in Aberdeen this afternoon, there are several on-going flooding and roads issues.

“Roads across the city have been affected, particularly in the city centre and beach area, along with Ferryhill and near the River Dee. Streets known to be affected by flooding include Polmuir Gardens, Jack’s Brae, Holburn Street, Anderson Drive, Market Street (south-bound between Virginia Street junction and Union Square turn-off), Hardgate, Portree Avenue, Froghall Road and Golf Road.

“The Maritime Museum and The Winter Gardens in Duthie Park have both been closed.

“Roads are likely to be affected for several hours, with the water levels predicted to rise and fall during this time.

“The Tullos Road Depot has extra vehicles out just now, including gully cleaners.

“Aberdeen City Council is delivering sandbags to homes and businesses in the affected areas and people can pick up sandbags from its Tullos Road Depot. The depot will stay open until 8pm and there will also be a night watch staff member on all night.

“Traffic lights have been reported as having failed at the Victoria Road/South Esplanade junction and the City Council is working to resolve the problem.”
