A teenager who was seriously injured on the last day of his summer job has died.

Denholm MacNamee – the Inverurie-based company where Michael McLean had been working – confirmed the 17-year-old had passed away after his life support machine was switched off today.

The Kincorth Academy pupil’s distraught parents revealed how they had said their emotional goodbyes at his bedside last night after they were told nothing more could be done to save him.

Michael suffered a broken neck and two punctured lungs in the accident last Friday – the last day of his six-week placement with the oil firm.

He had been saving money to pay for driving lessons and was due to begin sixth year at Kincorth Academy this week.

His father, Mark, a first-aider who also works for the firm, was called to help after his son was discovered and administered CPR until paramedics arrived.

Mr McLean and his wife, Angela, said they were hoping for a miracle as they waited for news about the extent of their son’s injuries.

Today, they are left devastated about his sudden and tragic death.

A spokesman for Denholm MacNamee said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Michael McLean.

“The company’s thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues and we are doing everything we can to support Mark, Angela, their family and our staff at this difficult time.

“We are cooperating fully with Police Scotland and the HSE in their ongoing investigations.”

His father had said that despite the tragic situation, he hopes others will be helped following the loss of his son.

“Michael had an organ donor card through the school and it’s also something we believe in. I’m hopeful some good can come out of this tragic situation and other people can be helped out,” he said.

Mr McLean and his wife have also thanked the medical staff at ARI who cared for their son.

“When they switch (the machine) off it will take about three hours for his heart to stop before they can start on his organs,” he said.

“The doctors have done all they can to save him and we have to thank them for that.

“Today has been a really bad day but deep down I knew I’d lost him on Friday.

“Everyone is totally distraught.”
