A special dinner and charity auction could prove a real knockout for Aberdeen boxing fans.

Next Wednesday, former super-middleweight world champion Joe Calzaghe will host the event at the city’s Hilton Treetops hotel.

But ring fans could have another goal in mind with a framed Aberdeen football club shirt, signed by boxing hall-of-fame member Sugar Ray Leonard, going up for sale.

All proceeds from the sale will go towards Macmillian Cancer Support

Mr Leonard visited the Granite City in March to give a motivational talk and even had time for a quick round of golf.

The 58-year-old fighter, whose real name is Ray Charles Leonard, was the first boxer to earn more than $100million in purses and was named Boxer of the Decade for the 1980s.

Aberdeen entertainment and events company Elite Promotions is handling table sales and sponsorship for the event.

John Anderson at Elite Promotions said “We have supported Macmillan in the past and they were our choice again as they are currently very busy trying to raise funds for improvements to Roxburghe House.

“The shirt was signed at our last sporting dinner in March when Sugar Ray Leonard was our special guest.

“At the time we told him of our plan to donate the shirt to Macmillan and of the fantastic work they do. He has asked to be kept informed on how the auction goes and how the Macmillan fundraising is developing.”

Jennifer Mitchell, senior fundraising manager for Macmillan, said: “We are extremely grateful to Elite Promotions for choosing us as the beneficiary of this very unique AFC framed top.”
