Plan your way through Aberdeen’s traffic light chaos

Yesterday traffic light failures saw huge delays across the city centre of Aberdeen.

The signals at the junction of Market Street and Guild Street went out at 11.30am – and police officers were drafted in until a temporary set were put in place around 4.30pm.

They have still not been repaired.

Temporary traffic lights are now in place at the Market Street/Guild Street junction after traffic lights at the site broke down.

Straight-ahead movement from Trinity Quay into Guild Street will be suspended until further notice.

Motorists are advised an alternate route is via Market Street (southbound), North Esplanade West, South College Street, College Street, Bridge Street and Wapping Street.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Engineers on behalf of Aberdeen City Council are working on repairing the problem at the traffic lights.”

However this morning between the  A944 Westburn Road and the A978 Argyll Place junction lights have also failed.

Yesterday traffic was brought to a standstill on a number of roads across the city, and just before 6pm Stagecoach confirmed that 59 of its buses were more than 35 minutes late due to the congestion.

Aberdeen City Council workers were battling to repair the problem lights overnight.

Meanwhile, drivers leaving Aberdeen to head north had to deal with queues because of an extensive fuel spill on the A90 Aberdeen-Ellon road.

It happened around 2.30pm and extended from Blackdog to just north of Ellon, leaving one northbound lane of the busy road very slippery.
