Witches, ghosts and cheeky devils will be running around an Aberdeen park this month as part of a family fun day.

More than 170 school children aged between four and 15 have registered to run a variety of distances from a 600-metre fun run to a 5K run at Hazlehead Park on Halloween.

The fun day will include Halloween surprises, and youngsters can also try out some outdoor sport equipment provided by the Denis Law Streetsport programme.

Funds generated from the day will go towards rejuvenating the park, including replanting the Queen Mother Road Garden, upgrading core paths, creating sign-posted running roads and improving the Pets’ Corner.

The event is sponsored by Aberdeen Sport and Friends of Hazlehead, whose chairman Donald Shaw said it was great to have so many children signed up.

He said: “We are thrilled to have so many children from local schools taking part in this fantastic event. It’s a great opportunity for the community to get together and enjoy this beautiful outdoor space.”

The 5K race is being sponsored by homebuilder Dandara, who will provide £100 to the first boy and girl to reach the finishing line.

There will also be prizes for winners of other races and for those who turn up in the best costumes.

Peter Best, the sales manager for Dandara in Aberdeen, said he was proud to be helping the park.

He said: “Hazlehead Park is a jewel in the crown of Aberdeen so we are beyond pleased to be supporting this event again

for 2015.

“It’s extremely encouraging to see so many young runners signing up to take part and everyone at Dandara would like to wish them all the very best when the starting gun fires on Saturday, October 31.”
