A 28-year-old man has died and a woman is seriously injured in hospital following a collision between a van and a car on an Aberdeenshire road.

The driver of the white Vauxhall Corsa van was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle crashed with a blue Honda CRV on the B9001 Inverurie to Rotheinorman road, near the Mains of Glack.

The 39-year-old female driver of the Honda was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries following the incident, which happened at about 6.50pm last night.

She was travelling in the car with a male passenger, also 39, a nine-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl.

Firefighters arrived on scene at about 6.45pm and had to release the woman from the car.

Police and ambulance services also attended.

The road was closed well into the night to allow police to carry out a collision investigation, the vehicles to be uplifted and the road cleared of spillage.
