The bomb squad are making their way to Aberdeen after a 70-year-old mine was discovered on the beach.
Police got a call from a member of the public at about 3.40pm.
It is believed the German device washed up on the shore.
Police have closed off the Beach Esplanade as a safety precaution, and are advising the road will remain shut between the Beach Ballroom roundabout and the junctions with Park Road and King Street for some time.
