The name of Portlethen’s long-awaited £13million third primary school will be decided next week.

Kincardine and Mearns councillors will consider the hundreds of suggestions for the school, at Hillside, which were put forward during a consultation earlier this year.

The 13-classroom school will be located on a five-acre site near Causey Mount road, and is expected to open in January 2017.

Aberdeenshire Council held a public consultation from September until October to ask locals what they would like the school to be named – attracting 366 responses.

The most popular title by far was Hillside School with 70% of votes.

Other popular names included Schoolhill Primary School, Auchlee Primary School, Boswell School and Causey Mount School.

Also among the suggestions were Bishopston School, Clochandighter School and Leathan Fields School.

The 355-pupil school will feature two GP rooms, a gym, library, a nursery, nature garden and grass football and all-weather pitches.

Director of education Maria Walker, said: “The eight names suggested by the community at the public meeting each had a link to the surrounding geography

“Hillside School received the highest number of votes as the preferred name for the school. It was also the most repeated of the additional suggestions.”

Members of the Kincardine and Mearns area committee will make a decision when they meet in Stonehaven on Tuesday.
