A group of Aberdeen students have raised hundreds of pounds for a north-east homelessness charity by sleeping rough for a night.

The 16 students from the Robert Gordon University had only sheets of cardboard and their sleeping bags for comfort as they camped down in Union Square’s car park.

The team raised £726 for Aberdeen Cyrenians, who offer support to those living on the streets in the Granite City.

For their challenge, the students split up into groups of two and four and braved the elements from 7pm to 7am in the shopping centre car park.

Sarah-Jane Reilly, one of the organisers of the event, said: “The sleep-out was a great success. It opened our hearts to the plight of homeless people in our city and raised awareness of the issue of homelessness in Aberdeen.

“We are proud to have raised so much for such a worthwhile cause. We hope that the money we raised will help to support the excellent services Aberdeen Cyrenians provides to people in need in our city.”

Nicky MacBeath, a fundraising officer for the Cyrenians, said: “The sleep-out is a really important event to help raise awareness of just some of the issues faced by homeless people every day like the cold, the lack of sleep, and the lack of basic comforts.

“The students did a fantastic job, and all the money they collected will help support our services across Aberdeen and the north-east.”
