Developers wanted to complete refurbishment of student halls

A search has been launched to find developers to complete the £4million refurbishment of student accommodation in the north-east.

Aberdeen University is looking for a contractor to carry out the work at Johnston Halls of Residence, located in the heart of the Old Aberdeen Campus near to King’s College and the student hub.

Residents living there are housed in a four-storey block, with each floor corridor containing 6 to 12 single rooms.

The refurbishment will include internal finishes, installing windows, replacing the roof and setting up the electrics.

The work is likely to be broken down into separate stages to allow some students to live in the building while it goes ahead.

An spokeswoman for the university confirmed a major revamp will go ahead once the right developer has been found.

“Aberdeen University is committed to providing a high standard of student accommodation,” she said.

“We have a rolling programme of improvements to our halls of residence and this is the next phase in the programme.”

Councillor Ross Grant, of the Tillydrone, Seaton and Old Aberdeen ward, said the investment would be welcomed by the student body.

He said: “I would also welcome this – given that it is an existing accommodation the innovation is to be welcomed.

“The move will have to go before a planning committee and we would have to decide on its merits, but student accommodation is a big issue in the area and one we have to be mindful of.”

Potential bidders will be put through a selection procedure and those who pass will be invited to negotiate.

It is estimated that invitations to tender will be sent out in January and the award given out the next month.

The deadline for applications is midday on December 16.
