The north-east should brace itself for more freezing temperatures in the coming days.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice in place for much of this morning.

It follows a day of snowfall across large swathes of Aberdeenshire, and icy conditions in lower lying areas.

Temperatures plummeted overnight between Monday and today, with Balmoral dipping to just below freezing.

And the chill was felt across Scotland, with Carterhouse in the Scottish Borders recording -4.6C during the same period.

Residents in Insch, Old Rayne, and Auchleven were forced to get their shovels out after heavy snowfall overnight which blanketed the area.

Elsewhere, Huntly and Inverurie were also affected by blizzards and are expected to be among the worst-hit areas tomorrow

Forecasters say the colder weather is likely to continue throughout the tomorrow, with highs of 2C and wintry showers predicted overhead.

A similar picture is forecast overnight into Thursday, with the mercury dropping to just below freezing.

Forecasters have said temperatures will increase slightly, with highs of 3C expected during the day.

And the Met Office has said the wintry conditions are likely to remain in place through the weekend.

A forecaster said: “The snow and ice has been caused by northerly air streams coming in from the arctic region.

“Sea temperatures are at their lowest point at this time of year, before they start to pick up again.”

Meanwhile, the impact of the freezing conditions was worsened by a number of crashes across the area.

A 45-year-old man was seriously injured in a two-vehicle smash on Argyll Road, Dyce at about 6.15am.

It involved a blue and black Kymco scooter and a white VW Scirocco, and the scooter driver was later taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

And in Moray, a car and van crashed on the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road, at Lhanbryde about 7.50am. Police said there were not believed to be any serious injuries as a result of the incident.

Later that morning, motorists also faced delays on the A90 Aberdeen to Dundee road following another car and van smash, at the Bridge of Muchalls, at about 9am. There were no injuries as a result of the accident.
