A popular north-east hotel was evacuated at the weekend after a chlorine leak.

Fire, police and ambulance crews were called to the four-star Ardoe House Hotel and Spa, at Blairs, at noon on Saturday.

The spa and swimming pool section were evacuated by emergency services, but nobody is thought to have been injured.

People enjoying a relaxing day by the poolside were forced to huddle together in the car park in dressing gowns as the hotel, on North Deeside Road, was checked.

It is believed the leak was caused by chlorine powder or granules leaking into a storage container, producing a gas.

The spa and pool remain will remain closed for the time being.

A spokeswoman for the retreat owners, Mercure Hotels, said: “We can confirm that the leisure facilities at the hotel were evacuated and closed due to a leak of chlorine gas.

“The facilities will remain closed until we are given the all-clear by the local relevant authorities who we are working with closely to restore the facilities to use.”

An investigation into the cause of the leak will be carried out this week.

Two fire appliances from North Anderson Drive and an incident support unit were called to the scene.

A fire spokesman said: “We were in attendance at Ardoe House. There was a chlorine leak at the pool and spa.

“It was two pumps from North Anderson Drive and we had and an incident support vehicle from Dyce. There was no notifications of any casualties.

“Ambulance were in attendance and checked out a few people. We assisted in the evacuation and stood by while we got the leak ventilated.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We got called. We were there but it was a fire brigade steer rather than us.”
