Treasurer who stole almost £10,000 from Aberdeen school given more time to repay cash

A treasurer who embezzled almost £10,000 from an Aberdeen school has been given more time to repay some of the cash.

Nicola Low was working for the parent-teacher association at Mile End Primary when she stole £9,620 from school funds.

The money had been earmarked to buy play equipment for pupils after it was donated by oil companies in the north-east.

However, the mother took cash over the course of a year.

Low was due to appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court for sentence yesterday after previously admitting the offence.

However, Sheriff William Taylor deferred sentence again to give her more time to return money to the school.

Low’s agent, solicitor John Hardie, said his client had managed to pull together £4,000 which she was now able to give back.

He said they were also working on a way to secure a further £2,000.

The court previously heard that Low was attempting to remortgage her west end home to repay the money in full.

However Mr Hardie said yesterday that this had not been possible as the property is only partly owned by her.

He said that since the embezzlement came to light her marriage had been “strained” and she needed to find alternative ways of finding the cash.

The case against the 48-year-old has been ongoing for about a year.

After entering her guilty plea in June Low appeared in court again the following month and the Crown moved for a proceeds of crime order to be granted against her to recover the cash.

Low, of 175 Mid Stocket Road, Aberdeen, will appear in court again in June.

Prosecutors had also accused her of embezzling hundreds of pounds from the National Youth Choir of Scotland when she first appeared in court.

She was alleged to have taken £832.26 from the group while acting as its area co-ordinator between June and December 2013.

However, the Crown accepted her not guilty plea to the charge.
