Plans for transformation of Aberdeen sporting facilities put on hold

Plans for the multi-million-pound transformation of sporting facilities in Aberdeen have been put on hold due to funding difficulties.

Aberdeen Sports Village announced a series of proposals for a £6million upgrade of sites around the Linksfield area last September.

These included converting the New Advocates Park to a fenced artificial surface with floodlights.

There were also plans for an artificial rugby pitch on an area of grassland on the corner of Regent Walk and Golf Road and the construction of new gym.

A share of the money required for the project was provided by funding body Sportscotland, but the ASV board has revealed it is struggling to come up with the cash.

An update on the project, which will be heard by councillors next week, said: “At present, this development is on hold as stakeholders cannot commit towards the capital costs of the project.

“As a result of this, not meeting Sportscotland’s funding requirements is a risk.”

The centre’s chief executive Duncan Sinclair added: “A condition of the Sportscotland funding for the sports centre was to build and develop outdoor 3G pitches as part of the third phase.

“In light of the challenging financial times, the funding for phase three is not quite in place and, regrettably, we have had to slow progress.

“We remain confident the third phase will be delivered at some point in the future and continue to have positive discussions with our partners and with Sportscotland.”
