An Aberdeen dating group was celebrating yesterday after receiving a £300,000 windfall from the lottery.
The £319,228 pot of Big Lottery funding will ensure the future of successful Aberdeen project dates-n-mates for the next five years.
The group, which helps adults with learning disabilities to meet new friends – and loves – started in the city just over a year ago.
Since then it has helped 60 people to enjoy new experiences from speed dating and karaoke to pool and bowling nights.
The funding will allow the group to expand its programme of social activities, dating and volunteering opportunities for more people who are lonely or isolated.
The project, which is delivered by charity C-Change Scotland, is one of 27 Scottish projects sharing in £4.9million of Big Lottery funding.
Joan Smith, from Aberdeen, said the group had really helped her come out of her shell and try new things.
She said: “I am really glad dates-n-mates Aberdeen has got funding from the lottery as it will mean we can plan ahead more.
“I have met lots of new people and got to know them through the events.
“I look forward to meeting up together and we always have a laugh.”
The Aberdeen group follows in the footsteps of dates-n-mates in Glasgow which has been helping people find love and friendship for eight years.
