Aberdeen City Council has reached the final of a national competition for sustainable transport.

The local authority’s hydrogen strategy and action plan has allowed them to reach the finals of the National Transport Awards.

Through its Hydrogen Strategy Aberdeen hopes to secure its place as a centre of excellence in hydrogen technologies, diversify the energy industry and reinforce its position as an energy city.

Council Leader Jenny Laing said: “This is fantastic that the Council has been shortlisted for this prestigious national award and is a testament to the hard work carried out by our staff and private sector partners.”

Last month, the Aberdeen Hydrogen Bus Project, a £21million initiative, was shortlisted for two national awards.

Aberdeen’s 10 buses make it the largest fleet of hydrogen buses in Europe, producing its own fuel at its production and refuelling station, the biggest of its kind in the UK.

The finals for the 2016 National Transport Awards will take place at the Westminster Park Plaza, London on October 13.
