A farmer was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a tractor crashed off a north-east road and into a tree.

The 62-year-old man was trapped in the agricultural vehicle following the incident yesterday around 10.10am.

Police, fire and rescue and ambulance services were called to the scene on the Glenbervie Road, close to Milton Park Farm, near Drumlithie.

The man was freed from the green Claas vehicle before firefighters arrived at the crash site.

He was taken by ambulance to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

The tractor was seen lying on its side in a ditch some distance from the road with its forks lodged in a tree.

The road was closed for eight hours as police carried out a collision investigation into the cause of the accident.

It was reopened at about 6.15pm after the tractor was recovered.

A police spokesman said: “A road traffic collision occurred on the unclassified road between Glenbervie and Drumlithie, Aberdeenshire, near Milton Park Farm, whereby (a) green Claas tractor left the road and came to rest in a ditch.

“The 62-year-old male driver of the tractor is currently being treated for serious injuries at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.”

Two fire appliances – one from Laurencekirk and another from Stonehaven – were called to the scene.

A fire and rescue spokeswoman said: “We were in attendance. We had our Laurencekirk appliance and our Stonehaven appliance mobilised to that.

“We got a call from the ambulance service at 10.18am. It was a road traffic collision between Drumlithie and Milton Park.

“There was a person trapped. When we got there the casualty had been removed. Small gear was used.”

An ambulance spokeswoman said: “We got the call at 10.11am to the Milton Park area. A double accident and emergency crew and officer attended within seven minutes.

“We did take a male passenger to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after assessing him.”

She could not comment on the nature of the injuries.

Sergeant Malcolm Kinross, of the force’s road policing unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the injured gentlemen and we are seeking the assistance of anybody who may have seen the collision or tractor prior to the collision.
