It started out eight years ago as a social media group informing locals in a Mearns village of local goings-on.
And now What’s On Inverbervie has opened up its very own “community shop” on King Street.
The venture will advertise local events to everyone in the village, act as a meeting place and sell clothing, books, toys, paintings and crafts to fund a number of activities.
The shop was made possible thanks to Fotheringham Property Developments, which owns the outlet and offered up a one year lease to the group.
Money made from the sale of items in the store, which will be run by volunteers, will go towards such burgeoning projects as setting up a community cafe at Inverbervie’s Burgh Hall.
Tickets for local events are also be available at the shop.
Last night chairwoman of What’s On Inverbervie, Caroll Evans, said: “We have been running on Facebook for eight years. We started out initially as an online notice board for playgroups and people having coffee mornings and so on.
“Fotheringham Property Development gave us it rent-free. We couldn’t really say no. I think the shop has been needed by the people in the community.
“All the events we run help fund the shop. All the money goes back into Bervie. The next big project is setting up a community cafe.
“This is actually brilliant in bringing in people who aren’t on Facebook, a lot of the older people. They can now be involved.
“It’s bringing back the social interaction that we lost through social media.”
Managing director of Fotheringham Property Development, Allan Fotheringham, said: “I am really impressed with the shop, it is brilliant. We have given a year for it and if it is a success we’ll just carry on the way it has been going.”
Inverbervie local, Sandie Gillbanks – a member of the village gala committee – said: “It is what we need in Inverbervie I think. It will help every single part of the community.”
