A 100-mile cycle with the ultimate finishing line

Hardy cyclists are being urged to take part in a 100-mile challenge – knowing there will be a refreshing pint waiting for them at the finish line.

The Stonehaven Midsummer Beer Happening will be held in the town’s Baird Park from June 15.

Visitors will be able to sample a variety of beers and food while being entertained by local bands in the purpose-built marquee.

Proceeds from the annual event are donated to local causes – but to further bolster the funds, cyclists are being encouraged to sign up for the 100-mile “Dinnaedo” route.

The route includes taking on the Cairn O’Mount – twice – as participants make their way through the Mearns countryside.

Organiser Robert Lindsay said: “We know cyclists love two things – a real challenge and rewarding cold beer at the end of it.

“That’s why we have thrown in the Dinnaedo. Let’s be frank, this is not for the faint-hearted. We are talking about 100 miles of cycling, with 8,100ft of climbing hills with gradients that would fear you and taking on Cairn o’ Mount twice. That is more ascent than any other cycling sportive in Scotland.

“But for all of that, entries for the Dinnaedo are soaring. As I said, cyclists like a challenge.

“As a not-for-profit event we donate money we raise to local charities and last year distributed £24,000 between three good causes.

Entry to the Sportive includes entry to the Happening and entrants must be 18 or over.
