VIDEO: Moment fisherman spots pod of orcas off Aberdeenshire coast

When Andrew McKenzie set off for work yesterday morning he thought it would be just another typical day.

But something happened that made it one he won’t be forgetting in a while.

The 27-year-old fisherman, was just off the Aberdeenshire coast, near Rattray Head, at around 9am when something caught his eye.

“It was a flat, calm day and we were shooting the gear when I noticed water spitting out,” he said.

“So we went over and had a look.”

When they got closer, they discovered it was a pod of orcas.

And like anyone would, Mr McKenzie, of Peterhead, whipped out his mobile phone to capture the amazing moment on film.

In the minute-long clip, a number of orcas can be seen coming up to the surface of the water before diving back under again.

It’s not the first time the fisherman has spotted killer whales – but he’s never seen them so up close.

“I just saw them and got the phone out to start recording,” he added.

“It was amazing to see them up close.”

Sharing the footage online, Mr McKenzie wrote: “Killer whales off Peterhead this morning. Perks of the job.”

It has been viewed more than 24,000 times and garnered lots of comments.

Sarah Elizabeth Hutchison said: “Wow. Dolphin trip and killer whale trip on my list of things to do now.”

Stephanie Graham also commented it would be a “dream come true” to see them up close.

Earlier this month an Orkney fishing party had the “experience of a lifetime” when they also encountered a pod of orca whales.

Erlend Manson, of Finstown, was enjoying a leisurely trip off the north coast of Orkney with friends when the killer whales made their presence known.

Mr Manson said the orcas made several passes close by their vessel and said members of the group has been stunned by the siting.
