Man dies in A90 smash near Laurencekirk

A man died in a crash on the A90 near Laurencekirk.

A man died after his car smashed into a tree on a busy north-east road yesterday.

The 60 year old was driving a grey Toyota Rav4 which left the carriageway and collided with a sign on the A90 Dundee to Aberdeen road near Laurencekirk.

His female passenger was unhurt in the incident, which happened on the northbound carriageway around 1.50pm.

The police and the ambulance service were alerted soon after it happened and attended.

One road ambulance and one air ambulance helicopter were sent, but nothing could be done to save the man, who died at the scene.

The fire service sent one appliance from Laurencekirk and another from Montrose to make the scene safe.

Both lanes of traffic on the northbound carriageway were closed until 4.15pm, when one lane was reopened. It was fully reopened at around 5.45pm.

Sergeant Neil Grant said: “Our thoughts are with this man’s family at this very sad and difficult time.

“I would urge any drivers who were in the area and saw anything to please get in touch if you have not been spoken to by Police already. Please contact us on 101.”

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “We received a call at 1:53pm yesterday to attend an incident on the A90 near Laurencekirk.

“We dispatched one ambulance, a manager and our helimed air ambulance to the scene.”
