A by-election will be held in Aberdeenshire after an MP officially stepped down as a councillor.
Gordon MP Colin Clark swept to victory in the recent general election as part of the Tory surge in the north-east, unseating former first minister Alex Salmond in the process.
Mr Clark had been a councillor for the Inverurie and District ward at the time of the election but had always pledged to stand down from his local government role should he win a Westminster seat.
Now he has officially resigned from his role at Woodhill House triggering a by-election in the near future.
Mr Clark has confirmed he will donate his councillor wages for the weeks since the general election to charity.
“I said during the election campaign that I would step down if I was successful in becoming an MP,” he said.
“Given the demands of the job including the requirement to be in London through the week, I do not feel that I can also commit the time required to fulfil the local councillor role.
“I have now resigned from my senior post as vice-chairman of business services and I am in discussions with my colleagues to agree a date to formally step down as ward councillor for Inverurie and District.
“I will be donating all of my councillor salary from June 8 onwards to charity.”
