A trust set up in memory of an Aberdeenshire woman, who was killed in a road crash, is offering groups the chance to win their share of up to £6,000 in funding.
Newly-qualified teacher Jo Walters, from Alford, was just 28 when she was knocked off her bike by a van in Brighton.
Relatives and friends set up the Jo Walters Trust, which is now in its seventh year, with the aim of supporting causes the keen fundraiser would have embraced.
Former Alford Primary and Gordonstoun pupil Miss Walters was a lover of outdoors sports, including sailing, kite surfing, kayaking and skiing.
Staying true to her own loves and interests, the trust seeks out projects which are educational, sporting, outward bound or environmental in nature.
Every year, the charity announces a fresh round of funding and people have until the end of August to apply for a grant.
Yesterday, trust chairwoman and Miss Walter’s sister, Lucy Johnston, said: “We are delighted to still be doing positive things in Jo’s name to keep her name alive in Aberdeenshire.
“The last round of grants went to really great causes and I think Jo would have really liked them.”
Last year, a total of £5,990 was awarded to groups, including Strathdon, Logie Coldstone and Aboyne primary schools.
Logie Coldstone Primary was given £900 for a two-day ski trip, while Aboyne was given the same amount for a cycle training programme.
Meanwhile, Networks of Wellbeing Ltd benefited from £1,700 to help run a cycling scheme being run at Gordon Schools, in Huntly.
Strathdon Primary was g cash to help run Forest School(capped as it’s a charity) scheme and the Aberlour Trust benefited from £1,640 to allow for a local staff member to undertake training in a similar project.
The deadline for applications is August 31.
Applications are submitted through a simple form which can be found on the trust’s website.
