Police have named the driver killed in a crash at Alford’s Grampian Transport Museum.

Emergency services were called to the site at Montgarrie Road just before 11am yesterday.

The museum was closed off while they dealt with the incident.

Police today named the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, as James Hickey, 22, from the Inverness area.

Detective Inspector Stewart Drummond, who is leading the investigation into the incident, said: “Our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this very difficult and sad time.

“Inquiries are still ongoing into the circumstances leading up to this incident and we continue to work with our partners including Aberdeenshire Council.

“As is the case with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.”

Grampian Transport Museum have also released a statement on their social media page.

It reads: “Friends of the museum will have heard by now that there was a serious incident involving an individual track hire test session yesterday where unfortunately the driver was killed. As a result the police and environmental health are investigating the cause.

“All our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.

“For the immediate future we will not use the road circuit. This will mean that the AllFord event and the Grampian Motorcycle Convention will not be staged this year.

“As a mark of respect towards the gentleman’s family and friends the museum is closed today but will reopen at 10am on Friday.”
